Mums!

Need to find out how to make mums less stringy. Last year in October I purchased six in different colors on an apple picking day. This year they are splendid, adding gorgeous pinks, oranges, whites, and yellows to my back and side yards. But they are stringy and fall all over the place, shortening the life of the blooms. I’m sure there is a good time to pinch/cut them back to encourage better and stronger branches. A must-do for the spring.
Also, they are already so big that I’ll need to divide them in the spring. I may try to get a bunch of them potted and ready for September – November on the front porch.
A recent good article on mums from the News-Herald in Willoughby, Ohio (near Cleveland). http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2009/09/20/life/nh1440733.txt

Shear your mums every two weeks starting in May and until mid-July…this is before they set their flower buds. I finally remembered to do it this past summer and I had glorious results….they all stood straight up, even when their heavy flower heads were in full bloom!
